One Defense Pure Guide OSRS – A BoboMart Sponsored Guide
Introduction
(Note: Most links in this guide will be to the OSRS Wiki if you need additional information/clarification on anything)
Welcome to our One Defence Pure Guide OSRS. A one defense pure is a combat pure that sacrifices training Defense to focus on maximizing damage output at a lower combat level. One defense pures are usually created for player-killing as high offensive combat stats typically provide greater leverage against low- to medium-tier armor. The levels of these accounts vary, although many are within the 50 to 90 combat level range.
One defense pures are formidable in short fights as they rely on killing their opponent quickly but are disadvantaged in sustained fights due to taking damage more consistently. This also makes training combat skills slightly more dangerous as monsters will do more damage over time.
A strong advantage for one-defense pures is that they have access to high-level weapons or spells that similarly levelled players with higher defense do not have.
One defense pures vary in combat level as players choose to obtain certain combat levels. As long as the character’s defense remains at level one they are considered a one defense pure.
If you need help deciding which levels to train, please check out our Melee Training Guide for a more general view.
Starting out
When creating a one-defense pure it is important to plan from the beginning which variation will be trained. For many, the primary goal will be to create a powerful character in a certain combat bracket which may mean limiting other combat skills as well. Variations include focusing entirely on either Magic or Ranged or focusing on obtaining 50 Attack for a granite maul, 60 Attack for dragon weapons, or 75 Attack for godswords. Players can also decide if they will obtain at least 25 Prayer for Protect Item. Players should note that if they do not train combat stats with Quests initially, they might reach a higher level in for example Attack or Prayer than they intended if certain Quests are completed at a later time.
It is recommended to consult the wiki’s combat level calculator and review quest experience rewards to ensure that you will meet your goal without compromising additional combat levels. For example, if you choose to level prayer it is best to do it through quests that also allow access to other items, spells, or areas.
Training combat stats
Magic
Magic is necessary for completing several of the quests you need, and also lets you get around quicker with teleports. 94 Magic is needed to cast Ice Barrage and 95 Magic for Fire Surge. Magic can be trained via Hitpoints (HP) methods, such as bursting, or non-HP methods, such as splashing, teleporting and alching.
Melee
Training Melee with Quests
Completing low-requirement quests will award attack and strength experience and significantly hasten early levelling. These are typically the ideal quests to start with:
- Vampyre Slayer – 4,825 Attack experience (free-to-play)
- Tree Gnome Village – 11,450 Attack experience
- The Grand Tree – 18,400 Attack, 7,900 Agility, 2,150 Magic experience
- Waterfall Quest – 13,750 Attack and 13,750 Strength experience
- Death Plateau – 3,000 Attack experience (also grants access to climbing boots)
- Fight Arena – 12,175 Attack experience
These quests amount to 63,600 Attack and 13,750 Strength experience, or level 45 attack and level 30 strength directly from level 1 and therefore should be prioritized due to manual melee training being very slow at low levels.
Safe Melee training areas
Because of the lack of effective armour for one-defense players, training areas available are limited. Hill giants and moss giants, for example, are a common melee training target with close access to a bank. However, training in these areas and many other common melee training areas is made more difficult for one-defense pures due to the constant need for food and inability to survive more than a few kills before needing to bank.
Members can AFK train at the rock crabs at Rellekka due to their low max hit and high hitpoints. Also available for AFK training are sand crabs along the southern coast in Hosidius and ammonite crabs after quest completion of Bone Voyage for access to Fossil Island.
Ranged
Training with the dwarf multicannon will allow for fast Ranged experience and minimum Hitpoints experience. There are many places to train Ranged so, in general, you may reference pay-to-play Ranged training. For chinning range make sure to not accept Daero’s training from Monkey Madness I when going back to Ape Atoll. Use the right-click “Travel” option instead, to avoid engaging in a dialogue with him.
Prayer
One defense pures sometimes opt for level 1 Prayer to remain low combat, and more often 44 Prayer to use overheads as well as Eagle Eye, 45 Prayer for Mystic Might, 52 Prayer for Smite or 55 Prayer for Preserve.
Training Prayer with Quests
The following are all quests that give Prayer experience and are possible to complete on a 1 defense pure:
- Rag and Bone Man I – 500 Prayer experience
- Making History – 1,000 Prayer experience
- Recruitment Drive – 1,000 Prayer experience
- The Restless Ghost – 1,125 Prayer experience
- Priest in Peril – 1,406 Prayer experience
- Mountain Daughter – 2,000 Prayer experience
- Ghosts Ahoy – 2,400 Prayer experience
- Another Slice of H.A.M. – 3,000 Prayer experience ( 25 required)
- Rag and Bone Man II – 5,000 Prayer experience (requires Slayer level 40)
- Note: It is possible to kill basilisks without a mirror shield by using poison and multiple rings of recoil
- The Great Brain Robbery – 6,000 Prayer experience ( 50 required)
- Rum Deal – 7,000 Prayer experience ( 47 required)
- Spirits of the Elid – 8,000 Prayer experience
- Swan Song – 10,000 Prayer experience
