Everybody who plays Runescape always wants to know how to get rich playing Runescape.
One of the first things that i’ll say is that a very common misconception that people have about side hustles on the internet is that you need to pour all of your effort into 1 thing, and if that fails then you’re done. This is so false and it pains me to see people think like that. The best pieces of general advice that i can give people for making money online is:
Don’t try to make a million dollars. Try to make 1 dollar a million times. Making money is a game of inches, it’s not an 80 yard hail mary pass.
Throughout this thread i’ll be explaining in details exactly how i utilized this concept to make money through my primary side hustle, Runescape. How to get rich playing Runescape is going to detail a story/scenario from my life and then explain afterwards how that impacted where/who i am today. And at the end we’ll compile those quotes together and show how you can implement those tips into your own life/online life/hobbies to do the same. Everything i say can DEFINITELY apply to any aspect of your life. And maybe we’ll throw in a few stories along the way to keep things from getting too boring…
How To Start Out
Rewind about 12 years or so. Little boy B was sitting in his college dorm playing Runescape. PvM was my jam. I was one of the leaders of the largest PvM clan in the game at the time, PSO. And naturally, we made a LOT of money through PvMing. Gold back then was over $2/m and we would spend all day camping god wars and corp and all of that good stuff. The only issue was that none of us RWT’d. So we just had bills upon bills stacked up in our banks. It was one of the unspoken rules that RWTing was bad, even though we all wanted to. So one day i said fuck it and did. I remember i was a freshmen in college and i sold my first 2b for around $3500 at the time. I felt absolutely fucking rich, and that’s where i took off. Told my clanmates that i had some bad luck at the duel arena and sent that money straight into my bank account. From then on, i RWT’d everything i got. Any excess that i didn’t need -> boom, into the bank account.
1) This is the first extremely important part to realize of turning a hobby into a business. You can have fun while making money. A moneymaking venture can also be a hobby. Lets say you like making candles (I was into that for a bit myself, it’s actually pretty fulfilling). You make candles for your family on holidays but never really anything serious. Try monetizing that. Buy wax in bulk on amazon, find a seller who’s willing to partner with you for scents (maybe a small seller on amazon or ebay, someone that feels like they’re getting as much value out of you as you’re getting out of them) and go from there.
Above all, plan it out and think every part through.
Botting
I wasn’t making very much at this time since ultimately i was still just “playing a children’s game” everyday. But that’s where everything really begins. I discovered the world of botting. Botting was pretty taboo back then for people that actually played the game – only the really bad people botted. But i saw the potential. I had a bunch of alts that i manually played on while studying or doing school projects to make money on the side in runescape, and always thought how insane it would be to automate that and not have to do anything. So i did.
I’ll skip the details on all the hundreds of accounts i had banned or the tons of failures i encountered while testing things out, but i also do want to mention that you WILL fail when you try out something new. Botting in runescape is actually an extremely direct example of that. It’s one of the hardest things to get into, and as much as people don’t want to admit it, Jagex’s bot detection is pretty decent nowadays (it used to be absolute shit, but that’s a story for another day). So i failed. A lot. But eventually, i found my niche. I botted A LOT of different things. Made money sometimes, sometimes i didn’t, but by far my most successful bot farm was my divination farm. For anybody who played, when cursed energys came out for divination sometime around 2016, they were a total goldmine. I jumped on this right away and had a friend write me a private bot for $250 for it. I won’t get into much specifics beyond this, but to put it simply – divination paid for my college education, almost in it’s entirety.
2) And so with that comes our second point. Don’t be afraid to fail, test things out yourself. It seems cliche, and it really is, but it’s also very accurate. There’s a reason that it’s a cliche – because it’s true. If i wasn’t willing to test out different methods myself then i wouldn’t have had the experience i needed to make the ultimate farm work. I built up tons of experience failing along the way, and when finally cursed energies came out, i knew what i needed to do make sure it worked this time. If you’re too careful, you’ll either miss your chance, or you won’t have enough experience built up to make things happen when a chance comes along.
2.5) Also worth noting, and i wanted to be sure to include this here as a half-point, is that you’ll never be successful if you’re just looking for other people to do things for you. In this specific example, sure i definitely did a lot of google searches for “best runescape botting money maker” and things like that, but you’ll NEVER find anything that will make you the goldmines of money by doing that. Remember – NOBODY will tell you their best money making method, and it will almost never be public knowledge. You should be learning from others and then using that knowledge to find your own way. This seems like it’s common sense, but you would be extremely surprised at how many people think that there are people out there who are just “nice” enough to share their million dollar methods online without any “catch.”
I botted for years. OSRS and RS3, i botted them both. Never put all of your eggs in one basket. In this specific example, the fact that i was botting both RS3 and OSRS was HUGE in terms of consistency. The reason is that both games were led by different teams obviously. So when the OSRS team decided to crack down on botting, the RS3 team usually wasn’t doing the same. So during those times i would slow down my OSRS farms and get RS3 going a bit more, and vice-versa. Always optimize your efforts where you can. If something seems like it’s a waste or will be too much effort for not enough output, focus somewhere else.
Another time-skip -> fast forward about 2-3 years. Botting is still pretty good, but it’s dying down because gold prices are dropping immensely. OSRS gp was less than $.75/m at this point, and RS3 had just taken a nose-dive to around $.15/m. The same methods as before are no longer viable, and honestly it’s not looking like ANY form of botting would bring in the big bucks like it used to… Remember what we said before though? I’ll remind you:
Don’t try to make a million dollars. Try to make 1 dollar a million times. Making money is a game of inches, it’s not an 80 yard hail mary pass.
So i needed to move on. This is when i started getting into OSRS services and flipping gp, which i still do to this day. Flipping gold isn’t as easily-accessible as other online moneymaking methods because you need a decent amount of capital to put down to make any real money. If you aren’t ready to put aside $15k or so at least to invest, then you won’t be making any real money. Customers are BRUTAL – they’ll consistently message you for gold, and unless you have enough supply to consistently give it to them, they won’t come back. They’ll just ask someone else who will say yes. So that’s why i say that if you only have $1k or so to invest then you won’t get very far. That being said, you definitely still can make money with low starting capital and work your way up. Remember – 1 dollar a million times.
So with my starting capital, i branched out. I signed up for every runescape forum i found. I just google searched “runescape forum” and things like that and signed up for them all. I didn’t become a vendor yet, but i went around and scoured each forum for people just casually selling off their gold. I never bothered with big sellers, because it was obvious they were doing the same thing i was doing – they were flipping. I targeted the botters and the PvMers – the people who were just trying to offload the money they made over the past week, and the people that the big sellers didn’t want to bother with because they were only selling 50m or so at a time. So i stacked up my supply through them because they were selling cheap.
After that, i started making my own threads for selling. The hard part about this is that you have no reputation (or maybe very low reputation/vouches) on these forums. So how do you start? You sell dirt cheap is how. Literally NOBODY will buy from you if you’re selling for the same price as someone with 1k vouches is. They’ll ALWAYS go to the big seller. So you HAVE to sell for a significantly lower price than other people are. This is literally the only way you’ll get any business at all while starting out. If a big seller is selling something for $15, you need to sell it for $10. Not $14, not $13 – you need to do $10. Because even for $14 or $13, even though you’re selling cheaper, people still will not bother with you because it’s only a few bucks. You need to give them a price that’s too good to pass up so they give you a chance. Keep your profit margins in mind and ALWAYS make sure you’re making profit still, but sometimes you need to be willing to take bare minimum profits to gain a customer.
I did this for a while and eventually gained vouches on all those sites, to the point that i could match the big seller’s prices and my regulars would always come back to me no matter what price i charged. That’s when your profit margins get huge and you start making the real money.
(This section is going to go a bit long as i’m including both gold selling and services in this, since i consider them pretty closely related)
I started doing services sometime around 2018. Very casually i just searched Sythe for people needing work done and i did them in my spare time. It’s all chump change really when you’re doing that. You’re never going to make any real money by doing services yourself, but remember what i said before – we’re here for the reputation. We’re building a customer base. And this holds true to any business venture that you’re running. Sometimes you’ll need to work for free or for dirt cheap just to gain someone’s trust because they may become a repeat customer. And when they trust/respect you enough, maybe they’ll drop that $1k order with you.
Eventually after i gained enough reputation, i started my own name-brand. I made a discord, bought upgrades on all the forums i was on, joined groups, called in some of my contacts that i’d dealt with over the years, and we got this shit started. Shoutout to my boy @Matt@ for helping me start everything. I hired a bunch of workers from Venezuela and they helped me get where we all are today. I consider these workers an extension of my family. I know all of their names, their families, their hobbies, their favorite color, etc. And because of this they have a mutual respect for me, and when i need them the most they always come through for me.
I really won’t go into too much details here on services, but generally – i don’t do any work myself (99% of the time). Everybody’s ultimate goal should be to get to the point where their only job is to manage. Manage other people doing the job that makes you money. Sit back, relax, and collect those fat checks. You can get to this point with ANYTHING. Any side hustle, any money making scheme can get to this point. Think about it – If YOU yourself can do a job, why can’t you pay someone else to do it for you? This logic will always apply, and you should be using that to fully “automate” your business.
3) That brings us to our 3rd and final point, which is: Work until you don’t need to work. Do jobs for free or for dirt cheap. Work your ass off, if it’s an IRL job put in those 12 hour days, 60 hour weeks – save up that extra money and invest it into a venture. One day, you’ll look back at it all, the aching back, the headaches from dealing with idiots, the times where you had to eat a can of beans because your funds are all invested at the moment, all the hard times, and i GUARANTEE that you’ll say – “It was worth it.”
Conclusion
Finally, if Runescape isn’t meant for you (or if you’re interested in other money making methods), make sure to check out our partner website Hustler Market for the best general money making advice from others who have already made it.
This thread isn’t really meant to be a guide. I’ve never been one for just telling people exactly what to do. It’s meant to be more of a source of inspiration, as well as a way to push people slightly towards the right direction of forging their own path. This story can apply to anything and everything – don’t tunnel on the ‘runescape’ aspect of it. This can be any online game, or any irl business. Anything that people have an interest in, you can make money from. There are ZERO exceptions to this.
