Melee Training Guide – A BoboMart Sponsored Guide
Welcome to our Old School Runescape melee training guide. In this guide we will go over all the different skills in Runescape and how to level them as fast as possible, both for Members and F2P players.
Training Melee / Combat in OSRS
Melee is any close-quarters combat based skill and include Attack, Defence, Hitpoints and Strength.
Questing
The best way by far to get started with melee training is to quest your early level stats. There are a few easy to complete quests that have no requirements and will give you a ton of combat XP. Completing these quests will get you all the way to ~40 attack and strength without having to spend hours mindlessly killing monsters.
Quests should be completed in this order:
- Waterfall Quest
- Witches House
- Fight Arena
- Vampyre Slayer
- Tree Gnome Stronghold
- The Grand Tree
OSRS F2P Melee / Combat Training
Alternatively, if you aren’t a fan of questing, here are the alternate methods which include training how the game was meant to be played – by killing monsters.
Level 1-10 F2P and Members Melee / Combat Training
Cows, Goblins and Chickens can be found all around Lumbridge Castle and will take you to around level 10.
Level 10-20 F2P Melee / Combat Training
Rats: To the South of Lumbridge Castle you will find Lumbridge Swamp. Here F2P Players can fight Rats to get to level 20.
Level 20-30 F2P Melee / Combat Training
Al-Kharid Warriors in the rooms to the east and west in Al Kharid Palace.
Barbarians in Barbarian Village to the west of Varrock
Giant Frogs in Lumbrigde Swamp
Level 30-50 F2P Melee / Combat Training
Hill Giants in Edgeville Dungeons. Enter through the house to the north-east of the Barbarian Village. You will need a Brass Key that you can get from the Grand Exchange. Or you can get the key from the dungeon by entering from Edgeville.
Flesh Crawlers and Zombies on the second level of Stronghold of Security are good XP for player level 40+.
Hobgoblins are also a decent choice for these levels.
Level 50-70 F2P Melee / Combat Training
Moss Giants in Varrock Sewers are good for leveling. Wear chain armor and a slash weapon.
Ice Giants are a good alternative to Moss Giants. They can be found in the Asgarnia Ice Dungeon the in the north-western part of the Wilderness
Level 70-99 F2P Melee / Combat Training
Giant Spiders in Stronghold of Security are the best XP for these levels F2P.
Ogress Warriors and Ogress Shaman in the Corsair Cove Dungeon are good for level 80+.
OSRS Member Melee / Combat Training
Level 1-10 Member Melee / Combat Training
Cows, Goblins and Chickens can be found all around Lumbridge Castle and will take you to around level 10.
Level 10-60 Member Melee / Combat Training
Ammonite Crabs on Fossil Island. Requires the completion of Bone Voyage quest. (!AFK!)
Rock Crabs to the north of Rellekka and Waterbirth Island. (!AFK!)
Sand Crabs to the south of Hosidius House, Crabclaw Island and Crabclaw Caves. (!AFK!)
Upgrading Your Gear
As you level up, make sure to upgrade your gear as necessary. At level 60, the difference between gear starts to become very significant as the XP per hour increases. Check out these references below to determine what the best gear/weapons for you may be.
Stuck with low-tier gear? Try upgrading your gear by buying some gold at BoboMart – buying even a few million coins will end up saving you dozens of hours in the long run.
A Fire Cape is also a gear upgrade that becomes necessary after around level 75 melee stats. If you think you’re ready, check out our Fire Cape Guide for the easiest ways to obtain this cape and increase your melee combat training xp per hour!
Level 60-99 Member Melee / Combat Training
This is when melee training gets EXTREMELY easy. Nightmare Zone requires that you complete 5 quests with boss monsters in them. Here are a list of quests that you can complete to unlock nightmare zone. You can technically choose any 5 of these, BUT the most efficient are: Fight Arena, Vampyre Slayer, Lost City, Mountain Daughter, and Tree Gnome Village.
With these quests unlocked you’ll reach upwards of 80k xp/hr after level 75. Make sure to ALWAYS wear your best combat gear with the highest stats!

Nightmare Zone – located to the north of Yanille.
Yaks in Neitiznot are also an alternative if you don’t feel like unlocking nightmare zone for whatever reason.
